BAGHDAD — An Army general who was hurt in a roadside bombing in Iraq this week was a former Marblehead resident.Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Dorko was the highest-ranking American officer to be hurt since the Iraq war began in March 2003. Dorko was in stable condition and was evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany; his injuries were not life threatening, according to The Associated Press. Dorko’s father, Ray Dorko of Marblehead, said he is awaiting an update on his son’s condition. Ray Dorko said his son, who had been stationed in Texas until his recent transfer to Iraq, was heading out to look at a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project in northern Baghdad when the bombing occurred. “It was a roadside bomb that exploded near his vehicle. That’s how he was injured,” Ray Dorko said.

Dorko, who is commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Gulf Region Division, suffered shrapnel wounds to his side and neck in the Monday morning explosion, Ray Dorko said.

Ray Dorko said he thought his son was relatively safe, serving with the engineers.

A military spokesman said Tuesday that no update was available on Dorko’s condition.

Dorko graduated from Danbury High School in 1974 and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1978.
