BAGHDAD (AP) - Dozens of people are feared dead in an assault by Sunni extremists on an isolated village northwest of Baghdad.

An Associated Press reporter was in the office of a deputy governor in Baquoba when a call for help came in. The official says the attackers are believed to be linked to al-Qaida and they have apparently overrun the village of Sherween. People in the village apparently put up a stiff fight. An unconfirmed account from people in the village puts the number of dead at 18 residents and 25 extremists.

An Iraqi army officer in the region close to Sherween confirms that insurgents appear to be in control.

The village is about 35 miles northwest of Baqouba and is about equally divided between Shiites and Sunnis.

US troops have been trying to clear Sunni extremists out of Baqouba.
