The Ministry of Defence has apologised after it invited a man to join the Army nine months after he was killed in Basra.

Reservist medic Lance Corporal Dennis Brady, 37, was killed after a mortar attack in Basra in October 2006.

But last month his mother, Brenda Brady, of Barrow-in-Furnish-, Cumbria, received a letter asking him to join up full-time.

His name was including in a mail shot and following the error all mail shots have been immediately cancelled pending an ‘urgent review of processes’.

Mrs Brady said she was too upset to comment on the mistake.

Defence Secretary Des Browne has written to Mrs Brady to ‘apologise unreservedly’.

And an MoD spokesman added: ‘We regret to confirm a letter addressed to the deceased soldier was received by his mother as a result of a recent mailshot.

‘All outbound calling and mailshots have been ceased with immediate effect until the problem is rectified.’

A date for the inquest into L/Cpl Brady’s death.

Mr Brady, a former PE teacher, had joined the army at the age of 25. He had been married to Zoe for six years but the couple had no children.
